Defined as: pretense, claiming, to have moral standards but do not conform. In other words, saying you believe in something but acting in a way that proves you don’t.
It’s a word I find myself using a lot lately. Politically, this behavior is rampant. Professionally, it’s been easier to recognize. Personally, I’m praying for discernment to see who is actually practicing what they preach.
What I really want to point out is hypocrisy is alive and well. This week I am concerned with healthcare systems who pretend to have the best interest of patients. Several times this week I am witnessed to operational decisions and leadership choices which on the surface appear to be patient oriented, when actually they serve organizational bottom lines. I am asked to make decisions that directly affect patient care while being measured against manufactured norms. Most healthcare providers are put in this position. Before we cross the line of hypocrisy, I encourage everyone to question authenticity. I love to quote James Baldwin-“I can’t believe what you say because I see what you do.”
