Root cause

This is a term used to describe the process to find the underlying cause of a problem. Right now I am experiencing pain in my shoulder. It seemingly came out of no where. When my chiropractor identified the issue, I couldn’t identify the cause. A few weeks later, while using my computer in an awkward posture, the pain came back and I immediately found the root cause.

My example is musculoskeletal, but the process to finding the cause is parallel to other issues. I had to identify the injury, how and why it may have happened in an effort to avoid having this problem again.

When faced with a problem, specifically in healthcare, we complete a root cause analysis to dig into the details of an event to identify the who, what, where, why, and when.
