“Lack of curiosity”- I noted those words from a sermon I was listening to by Pastor Jackie Hill Perry. It was in reference to a lack of curiosity when it comes to interacting with people who are different. The difference may be gender, ethnicity, age, occupation, interests and abilities and skill set. Intersectionality is a social science theory that reminds us of the many characteristics and experiences that shape each of us. And it encourages us to be humble and realize we can learn from each other’s differences. Cultural humility encourages us to recognize we do not know other cultures as much as we think we do.
When providing healthcare, start by listening with intent to learn. Listen with a curiosity that excites wonder. Listen with intent to understand and share decision making.
To borrow a message from Rev Dr Darius Daniels, you cannot become who you think you already are. Let that sink in! Be curious on purpose.
