I see everything through the health literacy lens. Even in the airport as I watch people go by, I see varying levels of confidence , anxiety, happiness and everything in between. Some are clear where they’re going. Some are clearly confused.
Picking up on behaviors, body language, and unspoken facial thoughts is a great way to work on communication. This is true for provider and patient. But the “owness” on communication is with the providers of healthcare. So let’s work on clear directions, teach back methods, and intentional listening to make sure people get where they need to go to improve health outcomes.
