It just occurred to me…

My brother was a juvenile diabetic. He took insulin shots twice a day if I remember correctly . He got sick with the flu or virus, something that made my grandparents take him to the doctor. The doctor told them to not take any of his medicine until he could keep food down. He passed away that night in a diabetic coma at the age of 27.

Last night I thought, was that what the doctor told my grandparents? or is that what they heard? It had never occurred to me before. I heard the story after the event.

There was a time patients just blindly followed what they were told. That time must shift to a partnership where patients are welcomed and encouraged to ask questions- this improves health literacy. Improved health literacy improves health!
