Listening

Listening is an underrated skill. Intentional actions to improve listening skills is beneficial for both parties involved in a conversation. When it comes to healthcare, the provider can help patients by taking time to listen to patients’ explanation and description of the condition which brought the patient to require medical attention. The patient may find it difficult to listen and absorb information especially during emergency and hospital visits. One technique provided by national health agencies can be useful to both parties: “the teach back method”. This method guides providers thru techniques to get immediate feedback to ensure a patient heard and understands instructions. It provides patients the opportunity to let providers know when further explanations are needed. This technique is beneficial to both parties in collaborative healthcare. And can be implemented immediately. HealthSpeak can show you how.
